CAT percentile vs college — what score gets you where

A percentile number means nothing without context. Here's how to actually translate a score into a realistic shortlist.

Percentile cutoffs shift every year based on exam difficulty and applicant pool, so treat every range below as a rough guide, not a guarantee — but broadly: the oldest IIMs typically call above the 99th percentile, newer IIMs and top private B-schools in the 95-99 range, and a wide field of genuinely strong non-IIM colleges accept well below that. A lower percentile doesn't mean a worse MBA — it means a different, and often still excellent, set of options.

Percentile rangeRealistic tier (broad guide)
99+Oldest IIMs, most competitive private B-schools
95-99Newer IIMs, strong top-tier private colleges
85-95Well-regarded private and public B-schools with solid placement records
Below 85Regional and specialized B-schools — see MBA colleges accepting alternate exams if CAT alone isn't the route

These bands shift year to year and vary by category and specialization — use official cutoff data from each college for your actual decision, not this table alone.

Why the percentile is a filter, not the whole decision

Two colleges accepting the same percentile band can differ sharply on placement quality, faculty strength, and fit for your specific goals. The percentile narrows your realistic list — it doesn't rank the colleges on that list against each other. See how to actually shortlist among colleges for the filters that matter once you're past the percentile cutoff.

Don't let a lower-than-hoped percentile derail the decision

A percentile outside your target range doesn't close the door — it changes which colleges are realistic, not whether a strong MBA is available to you. The comparison worth making at that point isn't "IIM vs everything else," it's a genuine look at what each realistic option offers.
