Entry-level hiring in Indian IT has weakened sharply. A Nomura report found that around 55% of IT companies in India reduced entry-level hiring in 2026, against a decline of only about 14% in senior roles. The squeeze is concentrated at the bottom of the ladder, and it changes what a student choosing a course today should be planning for.

What the numbers actually say

The asymmetry is the story. If hiring were simply slowing across the board, entry and senior roles would fall together. A 55% reduction at entry level against 14% at senior level says something more specific: the tasks that used to be given to a first-year hire are increasingly being handled another way.

Alongside this, employers have shifted toward candidates who have already worked with particular technologies, tools or business processes — rather than hiring in volume and training afterwards, which was the default model for two decades of Indian IT.

Why this hits freshers hardest

The work most exposed to automation is the well-defined, repetitive, closely-supervised kind — which is exactly what junior roles have historically consisted of. The first rung of the ladder was made of the tasks now most easily handled without a person. That does not remove the need for people; it removes the traditional on-ramp.

The uncomfortable implication is that "get the degree, get placed, learn on the job" is a weaker plan than it was five years ago — not because degrees stopped mattering, but because the training year it assumed is shrinking.

What this does not mean

It does not mean engineering is finished, or that technology careers are closing. Demand for people who can actually build things has not fallen — specialised AI and machine-learning roles are reportedly among the better-paid entry points precisely because supply is short. What has fallen is demand for undifferentiated graduates entering a training pipeline.

Be sceptical of both extremes you will read: that AI has ended entry-level work, and that nothing has changed. Neither matches the data.

  4. Ask what a role actually involves day to day before committing years to it

The part that is hardest to get from an article

Hiring conditions change faster than published information about them. A placement report describes last year; a course brochure describes an intention. Someone working in the field right now can tell you what is actually being hired for, and that gap between published and current is exactly where students lose years.
