MBA colleges accepting XAT, CMAT and MAT scores

CAT isn't the only route in. How the three main alternatives differ β€” and how to decide which is worth your prep time.

Writing a second entrance exam alongside CAT is usually worth it: the syllabus overlaps heavily, so the extra prep cost is small relative to how much it widens your college options. Which one to write depends entirely on the colleges you're targeting β€” check each shortlisted college's accepted exams before committing prep time to any of them.

XAT

Includes a Decision Making section CAT doesn't have, and traditionally a General Knowledge component. Accepted by a wide set of well-regarded private B-schools.

CMAT

A national-level test accepted broadly across AICTE-approved institutes. Different shape from CAT, generally considered more approachable.

MAT

Conducted multiple times a year, which makes timing flexible. Accepted widely, though the college tier accepting it varies significantly.

Exam patterns, dates and accepting-college lists change year to year β€” always confirm against each exam's official notification and each college's own admissions page before deciding.

Why a second exam is usually worth the effort

Most of the quantitative, verbal and reasoning preparation you're already doing for CAT carries over. The marginal work is on whatever sections are distinct β€” Decision Making for XAT, for example. For that marginal cost, you get a materially wider set of realistic options if CAT day doesn't go the way you hoped.

Don't write an exam no college on your list accepts

The mistake worth avoiding is preparing for an extra exam without first checking whether the colleges you actually want accept it. Build your shortlist first, note which exams each accepts, then decide β€” not the other way around. See CAT percentile vs college for how to build that shortlist realistically.

If you're skipping CAT entirely

That's a valid route too β€” see best MBA colleges without CAT for what to check when the entrance exam isn't CAT at all.
